Report #3 from Wellington, New Zealand.

Tuesday, October 20
Today, our students enjoyed another day of regular classes with their host students at Wellington High School.

We also joined a junior Japanese language class. The students played a fun quiz game about Japan and tested each other's knowledge. After that, everyone played a traditional Māori game using rhythm and communication.

After lunch, we joined a senior Japanese language class and visited Wellington Zoo. It was a great chance for the students to practise their English and Japanese while enjoying the zoo together.

Throughout the day, students made new friends, shared their cultures, and learned more about each other.

Wednesday, October 21
Today, our students once again joined their host students for regular classes at Wellington High School.

Later, we took a bus into central Wellington and rode on the famous Wellington Cable Car. At the top of the hill, we walked around the beautiful Botanic Garden and enjoyed the wonderful views of the city and harbour.

After exploring the gardens, we took the Cable Car back down and spent some more time looking around downtown Wellington.

It was another great day of learning, sightseeing, and enjoying Wellington!

Thursday, October 22 – Our Last Day!
Our last day in Wellington has arrived!

Today was the final chance for our students to join regular classes at Wellington High School. We visited junior Japanese language classes and enjoyed some fun games using teamwork and communication.

One of the most popular activities was a tower-building challenge! Students worked together to build the tallest tower they could using pasta, string, tape, and a marshmallow.

Students also attended Rōpū, their homeroom class, with their host students for the last time.

Later, everyone had some time to practise their farewell speeches before our special farewell ceremony and party after lunch.

It was a wonderful afternoon full of smiles, laughter, and a few tears. Our students thanked the teachers, host students, and new friends who had made their time in Wellington so special.

After many hugs and sad goodbyes, it was finally time to leave Wellington High School and head to the airport for our long journey home to Japan.

FInal Reflections:

Our time in Wellington has been a wonderful experience. Over the past two weeks, our students have made new friends, enjoyed school life in New Zealand, learned about Māori culture, and taken part in many fun activities.

Most importantly, they have tried their best to speak English, experience new things, and become more confident.

Thank you so much, Wellington High School!

Ka kite anō! – See you again!

Peter

Report #2 from Wellington, New Zealand
Friday, October 16
Today was a very cold, wet, and windy day in Wellington!
Hokkai and HGS students joined their host students for regular classes, including science, P.E., health, and maths. This gave them another chance to experience normal school life in New Zealand.

In the afternoon, we joined students from a senior Japanese language class. Together, they learned about shopping and fun things to do in downtown Wellington. It was a great chance for our students to practise their English, teach some useful Japanese, and become more confident when speaking with others.

My Weekend – Niko Yamamoto
Saturday, October 17
Today, I made homemade pizzas with my host family! We visited my host mother's parents' house, where we prepared pizzas outside and baked them in an oven. We made lots of different kinds, including salmon, olive, and ham pizzas. Actually, I hate olives!

Later, I went for a walk along the beach with my host mother's friend's dog. She was very cute and friendly, and I really enjoyed spending time with her.

Sunday, October 18
Today, I visited a popular wildlife park near Wellington called Staglands. On the way there, I played Shiritori in English with my host brother and sister. It was a lot of fun!

At Staglands, we saw many different animals, including birds, deer, sheep, and pigs. I also went into a cave that was full of creepy bugs!

Later, we had a barbecue and ate lamb. I don't usually like lamb in Hokkaido, but the lamb I ate in New Zealand was delicious! I also spotted a big eel swimming in a stream. I was really surprised!

After that, I played a card game called Sushi Go! with my host brother and sister. It was so much fun! I also taught my host brother some Japanese kanji. My host sister told me that she likes the Japanese word "かわいい" , which made me very happy.
In the evening, I called my family in Japan. My host family and my family had a chance to say hello to each other through a video call. It was a very enjoyable weekend!

Monday, October 19
The sunshine finally returned to Wellington today! After several days of cold and wet weather, it was great to see blue skies again.
In the morning, our students learned about New Zealand's special birds and other animals. They also learned about the dangers these animals face and how people are working to protect them.

In the afternoon, we took a Wellington public bus to Zealandia, a large forest area where New Zealand's native birds and animals are protected. A special fence keeps dangerous animals such as rats and cats out, so the native wildlife can live safely.
We walked along several forest paths, looking for some of the birds we had learned about in the morning. We also saw several tuatara, special reptiles that are only found in New Zealand!

It was a lovely afternoon enjoying nature, getting some fresh air, and seeing New Zealand's amazing wildlife.
The sunshine and exercise made everyone feel fantastic!

Peter

Wellington High School – New Zealand Study Tour 2026

Monday, October 12 – Arrival in Wellington
We had a smooth trip from Sapporo to Wellington, flying through Narita and Auckland. There were no problems during our flights.
When we arrived at Wellington High School, we met Nico Yamamoto's host family in the school library. The weather was sunny and warm. It was a great start to our visit!
Tuesday, October 13 – Welcome to Wellington High School
Our first day at Wellington High School was cold, wet, and windy!
We started the day at the school's marae (Māori meeting place). We took part in a pōwhiri, a traditional Māori welcome ceremony. The ceremony was held entirely in Māori.
WHS students welcomed us with a Māori song, and Peter Sensei gave a short speech in Māori. We then sang the famous Japanese song Sukiyaki (「
After the ceremony, we joined Japanese classes and played fun language games in English and Japanese. Students found that they had many things in common, including their favourite music, movies, anime, and pets.

Wednesday, October 14 – Learning About Different Cultures
We are starting to understand why Wellington is famous for its strong winds!
In the morning, we learned about Māori language and culture. We also joined an English class with international students from countries such as Indonesia, China, Pakistan, and South America. Their teacher was from Osaka!
Everyone enjoyed talking together and learning about each other's countries and cultures.
In the afternoon, we met Lorna, our former exchange student, and her Japanese class. Together, we visited Te Papa, New Zealand's national museum.
We saw many interesting displays about New Zealand's history, culture, animals, and Māori art. It was a great learning experience!

Thursday, October 15 – Māori Games and Mini Golf
Today, we learned more about Māori language and culture by playing traditional games and singing songs.
We learned “Tūtira Mai Ngā Iwi,” a famous Māori song about friendship, unity, and helping each other.
Later, everyone enjoyed playing indoor mini golf together. The course had many interesting designs based on famous places in Wellington and New Zealand movies, including The Hobbit.
It was another fun day of learning and spending time together!
